Kevin McCall’s name has been all over social media lately, but not for the reasons he might want. The singer and songwriter, once known for his collaborations with Chris Brown, is going viral again after an old 2019 interview resurfaced — revealing that he blew through roughly $8 million during his peak years.
In the clip, which was recently reposted by DJ Akademiks, McCall candidly admits that poor financial management and inexperience led to his downfall. “I got a check for over six figures,” he recalled, speaking about his work on Chris Brown’s smash hit Deuces. “I ain’t never seen nothing over $10,000 in my life.” Despite earning millions from his music, McCall says he didn’t understand financial literacy and ended up losing nearly everything.
“I had a four-bedroom house in Woodland Hills, and my child’s mom had to pay the rent,” he admitted. “I’m thinking I’m broke, knowing I got checks coming from here and here.” Looking back, McCall said nearly losing his family forced him to realize how reckless his money habits had become.
While many fans once praised his honesty, the resurfaced clip hits differently now. In recent days, McCall has blamed Chris Brown for his financial woes, accusing his former collaborator of leaving him out in the cold. During a recent appearance on the Back On Figg podcast, he became emotional discussing his struggles, even asking Brown to help him out financially.
“Why the f*ck I got an EBT card?” he said. “Can I get $25K for them four songs I owe you?” McCall broke down in tears, claiming he just wanted some of the money he felt he was due. But Chris Brown didn’t appear to take the plea seriously. After Young Thug suggested that Breezy might step in to help, Brown instead took to social media to throw shade. “Remember this,” he wrote, “you can’t walk across a burnt bridge. And you know what’s funnier than a troll? A BROKE one.”
Once a promising talent who helped shape early 2010s R&B alongside Chris Brown, Kevin McCall now stands as a cautionary tale about fame, money, and fractured friendships in the music industry.
