After more than 15 years behind bars, Max B — real name Charly Wingate — is finally a free man. The Harlem legend, known for his melodic flow and signature “wavy” style, has officially been released from prison, marking the end of a long and turbulent chapter in his life.
Max B was originally sentenced to 75 years in prison in 2009 for his alleged role in a botched New Jersey robbery that turned deadly. However, his conviction was later overturned, and in 2016, he struck a plea deal that reduced his sentence to aggravated manslaughter, paving the way for an eventual early release.
The “Wavy Crockett” rapper had been teasing his freedom for months. Earlier this year, he called into The Joe Budden Podcast, announcing, “We got a date! I’ve got November 9, 2025, baby!” — and true to his word, he’s now home.
The news was confirmed by French Montana, one of Max’s closest friends and collaborators, who took to Instagram to celebrate the milestone.
“CANT MAKE THIS UP! MY BROTHER REALLY CAME HOME ON MY BDAY! HAMDULILLAH WALKED IT DOWN! NO MORE FREE YOU…”
Max B’s influence on New York hip-hop runs deep. His distinctive sound, swagger, and pioneering use of melody laid the groundwork for countless artists, from French Montana to A$AP Mob and beyond. Even while incarcerated, his name remained synonymous with Harlem’s gritty yet stylish rap legacy.
As fans across the world celebrate his long-awaited release, many are already speculating about what’s next for the “Silver Surfer.” Whether it’s new music or simply enjoying his freedom, one thing’s for sure — the Wave God is back.
