Allen Iverson has achieved countless milestones on the basketball court — but his latest victory might be the most meaningful yet. The NBA Hall of Famer revealed he’s officially six months sober, calling it one of his greatest accomplishments and a major turning point in his life.
Finding peace beyond the game
During a candid interview on CBS Mornings with Maurice DuBois, Iverson opened up about his decision to quit drinking while promoting his new memoir, Misunderstood. The 50-year-old NBA icon reflected on how alcohol once consumed too much of his life, and how stepping away from it has brought him long-overdue peace.
“One of the best decisions I have ever made in my life was to stop drinking,” Iverson shared. “When you get drunk, you are not how you usually are. The more and more I see it on other people, the more and more it make me happy about the decision.”
He added that his family, including his longtime wife Tawanna Iverson, has noticed the difference.
“The more and more I see how the people around me appreciate it, I love it.”
A new chapter with “Misunderstood”
In his upcoming memoir Misunderstood, Iverson looks back on his legendary — and often controversial — basketball journey. The book dives into defining moments such as his famous crossover on Michael Jordan, his 1993 high school arrest, and his iconic “practice” press conference that remains one of the most quoted moments in sports history.
Now, half a year sober and in a new phase of self-awareness, Iverson says his focus is on family and inspiring others who may be struggling.
“I just want to use my story to show people that it’s never too late to change,” he said.
